Chelsea host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 24 October seeking a third consecutive league win. Two selection questions frame the derby: how will Chelsea protect Mike Penders, who is expected to make his first Premier League start, and how will Spurs create chances if James Maddison is unavailable?
Chelsea’s recovery still needs protection
Xabi Alonso’s side have gathered momentum over the last two rounds. A 5–1 win against Bournemouth was followed by a 2–0 victory at Everton, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals. The latter result also brought defensive relief, as Chelsea finished without conceding. The task now is to sustain that resistance against opponents with different attacking options.
Recent results should not erase the warning signs. The draw with Hull and defeat at Brentford showed that Chelsea can lose control of a game. Against Tottenham, they need to maintain their attacking threat without leaving their defence exposed when possession changes hands. Scoring freely does not automatically keep a goalkeeper out of trouble.
A major first test awaits Penders
Emiliano Martínez is unavailable following surgery on the jaw injury he sustained at Everton. Mike Penders replaced him during the second half of that match. The young Belgian is now expected to start, although the official team is still to be announced. That enforced change puts particular emphasis on Chelsea’s early passes out from the back and the situations their goalkeeper is asked to handle.
Alonso can call on Malo Gusto again, but Pep Chavarria and Emmanuel Emegha remain unavailable. One player’s return therefore does not mean a full-strength squad. For Penders and the defenders around him, maintaining the right distances between teammates will matter as much as their willingness to build from the back.
Spurs are improving, but Maddison is a doubt
Tottenham finally recorded their first league victory at the seventh attempt when they beat Coventry 3–1 on Monday. That result gives them something to build on; it does not make their start to the season convincing. A trip to Chelsea should offer a clearer test of whether the improvement can hold against a stronger attacking side.
James Maddison scored against Coventry on his return to the starting lineup. His involvement in the derby remains uncertain, however, after several days without team training. Roberto De Zerbi has alternatives between midfield and attack, including Omar Marmoush, who has been confirmed available. The Egyptian provides a genuine option, although neither his position nor a starting place is yet certain.
Pedro Porro, Andy Robertson and Dominic Solanke are also available. Destiny Udogie, Lucas Bergvall and Savio remain sidelined, while Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended. De Zerbi must balance those returning options with the need to rebuild collective understanding. Threatening Chelsea’s goal will be only part of the challenge: Spurs also need to stop the home side’s creators from settling close to their penalty area.
