The 76ers found an answer without two of their stars. Missing LeBron James and Joel Embiid, Philadelphia erased a seven-point deficit in the closing minutes to beat Charlotte 109–104 on Saturday 31 October at the Spectrum Center. Tyrese Maxey carried the visitors with 38 points, while Cameroonian Moussa Diabaté contributed 10 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets.

A 15–3 closing run

With 3 min 41 left, the seventh three-pointer from Grayson Allen still had Charlotte seven points clear (101–94). Philadelphia then tightened up defensively and found Anfernee Simons, who hit a three in the visitors' response. The Hornets then went six possessions without scoring.

Maxey put the Sixers back in front with two free throws with 1 min 22 left. VJ Edgecombe then hit a three-pointer to stretch the lead to 105–101 with 36 seconds to play. Brandon Miller cut Charlotte's deficit to three in the final seconds, but Jaylen Brown answered from the free-throw line to set the final score.

Maxey steers a reshuffled team

Maxey scored 15 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter, adding four rebounds and four assists over the game. Simons contributed 19 points off the bench, including five three-pointers. Brown, back in the starting five, added 16 points.

Both teams were playing the second night of a back-to-back. After beating New York the night before, the 76ers rested James and Embiid. Charlotte had made the better start, however, scoring 37 points in the first quarter, before Philadelphia went ahead at half-time (57–54). The Hornets then regained a six-point lead heading into the final period.

Diabaté efficient, Charlotte left empty-handed

Allen finished as the Hornets' top scorer with 27 points, ahead of Miller with 24. Starting, Diabaté made all five of his shots, grabbed eight rebounds and added three assists and two blocks. Charlotte nonetheless turned the ball over 18 times to the Sixers' eight, a costly gap in a tight finish.

Philadelphia now have six wins in seven games. Charlotte are 3-4 and will host Detroit on Monday 2 November, while the 76ers welcome Chicago.
