A dynamic that no longer owes anything to chance
Long discreet, sometimes even forgotten, Bamba Dieng (25 years old) is now one of the fittest strikers in the French championship. Sunday against Auxerre (2-2), the FC Lorient striker scored a brace in ten minutes, a recovery from the left (19th) then a diving header (29th), symbols of a player who became instinctive and efficient again in the area.
With 6 goals scored in Ligue 1 since the beginning of the year 2026, he shares the lead in the goalscoring standings over this period with Ousmane Dembélé. A statistic far from being anecdotal: no other player has weighed offensively in France since January.
More than a series, it’s a continuity. The calls are more accurate, the movements more constant, and the confidence visible in each ball between his legs. Dieng no longer overplays, he concludes.
The long road to reconstruction
This renaissance contrasts strongly with the recent trajectory of the player. Arrived in Lorient in 2023 for about 7 million euros after his stint in Marseille, the Senegalese international seemed to have gotten stuck between injuries, loss of pace and sports downgrade.
Removed from the professional group last summer, he had to go through the reserve to regain playing time and credit with the staff. The turning point occurs on December 20, 2025, in the Coupe de France against AS Gosier: a hat-trick scored in 38 minutes that acts as a psychological trigger.
Since then, Olivier Pantaloon has gradually reinstalled his striker in the eleven. The Corsican technician talks about a player who returned with 'very good intentions', ready to rebuild his place step by step. Result: Dieng has once again become the main offensive weapon of the Merlus, notably relegating his compatriot Sambou Soumano to the bench.
The most outstanding Senegalese striker
If this form attracts attention today, it is also because the context in national selection is favorable to it. With the approach of the friendly matches during this month of March a few months before the kick-off of the 2026 World Cup, no Senegalese striker has truly established itself as an indisputable reference after the AFCON.
Nicolas Jackson alternates convincing periods and more complicated passages, without managing to lock the position permanently. Since his return from the CAN, he has suffered from a lack of playing time at Bayern Munich. Boulaye Dia is going through a difficult season at Lazio with only one goal in Serie A. Habib Diallo and Chérif Ndiaye remain options used more as rotation solutions than as offensive leaders.
In this uncertain landscape, the current regularity of Bamba Dieng becomes a strong argument. Its vertical profile, based on depth and spontaneity, offers an interesting tactical alternative in a Senegalese attack sometimes lacking percussion. African Champion with Senegal at the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon, he had assumed his joker status by being decisive.
The moment or never
Absent from the national team since March 2024, the former OM striker is probably playing in one of the pivotal moments of his international career. Its current form comes precisely at a time when Pape Thiaw must redefine the offensive balances that are still unstable.
Beyond the goals, Dieng today reflects the image of a mentally restarted player, capable of linking and especially to weigh in important matches, a decisive criterion at the approach of a world class standard.
Long considered an irregular talent, Dieng is gradually becoming a credible option for the Lions. And in open competition, the dynamics of the moment can sometimes weigh more heavily than status. Bamba Dieng has perhaps never been so close to a real return to the forefront.
