Moroccan striker Abdelkabir El Quadi was one of the scorers as Smouha SC shocked defending champions Zamalek in an Egyptian League match played at the Borg El Arab Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Fresh from a disappointing 2-2 home draw to Angola’s Petro Atletico last weekend, the The Whites hopes to return to winning ways.
After a a competitive first half with the two teams each creating numerous scoring opportunities, Smouha returned a better side after the interval.
It was Sodiq Ougola who gave Smouha SC the lead after 64 minutes when he fought the Zamalek defending line flat footed. The defending champions tried to fight back strongly, but failed to break their opponents who defended in numbers.
After 78 minutes the Moroccan Abdelkabir El Quadi made no mistake from the spot, beating Zamalek’s goalkeeper Mohamed Awad.
The defeat puts Zamalek’s French coach Patrice Carteron under pressure as they try to battle to retain the Egyptian Premier League title.
The victory sends Smouha SC to third place with 18 points, one behind table leaders Al Ahly and Zamalek.
Al Ahly who have two games in hand have recorded six wins and one draw, while Zamalek who have played nine matches have now suffered two defeats.
