CAF suspends Kenya and Zimbabwe from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations
The sentence has been passed on Kenya and Zimbabwe. Suspended from all football-related activities by FIFA, the two countries will not take part in the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers which begin in a few days. CAF has made the sanction official.
"Following the maintenance of the suspension of Kenya and Zimbabwe from all activities by the FIFA Congress, CAF announces that the two associations will not participate in the second round of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations Ivory Coast 2023. These qualifiers will kick off on 1 June 2022. Despite their suspension due to political interference, CAF had included them in the draw on a provisional basis, provided that the suspension was lifted 2 weeks before their first match day of the qualifiers. Kenya and Zimbabwe have not yet fulfilled the criteria required by FIFA as a prerequisite for the lifting of their suspension," reads the CAF statement.
The latter will also proceed with a reorganization. The draw for the qualifiers having already been made, the two teams knew their potential opponents. Kenya was in pool C with Cameroon, Namibia and Burundi. Zimbabwe were in Group K with Morocco, South Africa and Liberia. These two groups will therefore comprise only three teams each, CAF said.
