AFCON 2023 - Devis Epassy: '' We will do everything to make Cameroonians proud"

Substitute at the beginning of the World Cup, Devis Epassy played the last two games for Cameroon at the 2022 World Cup following the sanction of Andre Onana. The Cameroonian international returned on his experience but also on his ambitions with the Indomitable Lions for the 2023 AFCON.

Second goalkeeper of Cameroon at the World Cup 2022, Devis Epassy found himself as a starter in the second game (against Serbia 3-3) after the ouster of Andre Onana. Two games, a prestigious victory against Brazil (1-0) and a draw, this is the record of Epassy at the World Cup 2022. An unexpected experience, but one that did not bother the goalkeeper of Abha SC in Saudi Arabia, who spoke to Footmercato.

"First of all, I was happy to have this opportunity to play the World Cup. Then I was just focused on the games that were coming up. Because I knew I was expected and watched. It adds a little extra pressure but a positive pressure. I took it naturally. Because I still want to play. All the players called up want to play afterwards, it depends on the coach's choices and you have to respect that. I was ready to play if I was called up and that's what I did," said the Cameroonian international.

Not very reassuring against Serbia at the World Cup (3-3), Epassy redeemed himself against the Brazilians by multiplying the decisive saves. With the international retirement of Andre Onana, the goalkeeper of Abha SC is well on his way to be a starter at the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 in Côte d'Ivoire. A competition that he dreams of course to play and win for his people. "The next Africa Cup of Nations is an objective for me but also for all Cameroonians. We are Cameroonians and our ambition is to always win. The next CAN in Ivory Coast, we will do everything to make Cameroonians proud," he said.

Devis Epassy, who currently plays in Saudi Arabia, does not exclude a return to Europe and seems to enjoy the Spanish championship. Even if he admits to having offers from clubs in the French Ligue 1. "I have received concrete proposals from French and foreign clubs. I do not close any door. In the immediate future it could be complicated but we'll see in the future (...) I'm not closed to a return to France but it is not a priority now. The Spanish championship is a championship that I like a lot. Whether it's the way they play or how they see soccer, I like it a lot," concluded the former Clairefontaine player.

Aged 29, he does not have too much time to launch into a new sporting project.
