Somalia to enter teams in more competitions – Abdi Mohamed

The newly elected President of the Somali Football Federation (SFF), Ali Abdi Mohamed has promised that they will enter teams in many more International competitions to give players more exposure.

Abdi Mohamed was elected new President of SFF during an elective General Assembly held in the capital Mogadishu on February 22nd, 2023.

After FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated Abdi Mohamed and his new executive in a communication dated March 3rd, 2023, the new Federation President has made it clear that they are prepared to change several things in Somalia to ensure football develops in the country.

The new President made it clear that locally they will increase the number of football competitions organized in a bid to create more opportunities for the youth in the country.

He also said Somalia will participate in a number of international, continental, regional and friendly competitions. “It is our duty to get Somalia active in the international calendar and the first assignment we have is the AFCON U-17 tournament to be held in Algeria next month,” added Abdi Mohamed.

He said in this new chapter the Somali players will have the opportunity to participate in Olympic qualifiers, Arab Cup, FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and many of the Zonal CECAFA competitions.

“This is a new era and we are going to need all the support of the government and the private sector. Sponsorships are vital for the development of football and it is absolutely necessary for the Somali Football Federation to promote cooperative relationships with companies in the country,” he added.

He also thanked FIFA, CAF and the government of Somalia led by the Prime Minister, His Excellency Hamza Abdi Barre who ensured that prober elections for SFF were held.

“I would like to send a big thank you to FIFA and CAF for the role they have played to ensure that Somali football enjoys stability. I also take this opportunity to thank them for their generosity towards Somalia as they are our key financiers and without them we wouldn’t have been able to play the game in Somalia,” added Abdi Mohamed.
