NPFL MD11 Reviews: Insurance extend unbeaten run as Remo Stars pick away win

Insurance slip up at home

Bendel Insurance extended their unbeaten record to 10 matches in the Nigeria Premier Football League following a 1-1 draw with Akwa United at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Wednesday.

Bendel Insurance dropped points for the third time at home this season but preserved their unbeaten run after Imade Osehenkhoe scored the opener as early as the second minute.

Akwa United, however, fought back to avoid defeat and were rewarded with the leveller through Cyril Olisema on 34th minute of the encounter.

In Maiduguri, Remo Stars recorded the only away win of the mid-week fixtures as they secured a 2-1 victory over El-Kanemi Warriors at the El-Kanemi Stadium, Maiduguri.

Andy Okpe and captain Junior Irabor were on target as the Ikenne club secured the crucial win to improve their chances of making the Super Six, moving them to second position on the Group A table.

In Ibadan, Shooting Stars kept their topflight survival alive with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Plateau United, while eight-time champions Enyimba dropped points at home after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nasarawa United.

In Akure, Sunshine Stars squandered the opportunity to climb up on Group B table after they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Akure Township Stadium by newcomers Doma United.

Elsewhere, 2016 NPFL champions Enugu Rangers had their relegation woes further compounded as they were defeated 2-1 at home by neighbours Abia Warriors.

Jimoh Gbadamosi, who opened the scoring early via a penalty for the visitors, but John Uche leveled matters for Rangers hope in the 26th-minute equaliser.

Uche Odeh's second half strike proved to be enough for the Warriors to seal victory in the Flying Antelopes' den.

Group B rivals Rivers United, who are the defending champions, and Lobi Stars were the only teams absent on the day due to the Pride of Rivers' campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.

A total of 22 goals were scored in nine matches, an average of over 2.44 goals per game, with the game between Shooting Stars and Plateau United delivering another classic in the league.
