CAF Cup: Congolese clubs finish in last places

The eight qualifiers for the quarterfinals of the CAF Cup are known. North Africa will once again be well represented while the Congolese clubs all go to the trap door.

Terrible for Congolese soccer. Plummeted by the stoppage of their championship for months, the clubs of DR Congo have failed to make exploits in the CAF Cup. At the end of the group stage, this Sunday, April 2, they all take the door. Worse, they are almost all last.

Saint Eloi Lupopo, in group A, ended with a defeat on the ground of the leader Marumo Gallants (2-3). They were leading at the break 2-0 thanks to Kateregga (23rd) and Mwaku (45th) against a team already qualified. But the South Africans came back and took the final lead (3-2). Lupopo finished third in the group behind Marumo and USMA, who qualified for the quarterfinals.

Motema Pembe without success in six games
In Pool B, Motema Pembe has not recorded any success in six games. They leave the competition with a draw against their neighbors from Congo-Brazzaville, the Diables noirs (0-0). The two formations leave the two qualifying tickets to ASEC Mimosas who won their last four games and Rivers United. These two teams will be the only two representatives of West Africa in the top 8.

TP Mazembe is also on the chopping block. Winner of the competition in 2016 and 2017, the Crows have just recorded five defeats in a row. They were beaten this Sunday in front of their public by Young Africans (0-1). The Congolese are last of the group D with only three points. They were far from the level of Young Africans (13 pts) and US Monastir (13 pts) who took the two qualification tickets.
