Ghana U20 Girls beat Benin in WAFU Zone B tournament opener

The Black Princesses are off to a flying start as they put three past Benin in the opener of the WAFU U-20 Girls tournament at the Baba Yara Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Ghana nearly went up in the early minutes when skipper Stella Nyamekye sent in a long shot was but was saved by Benin goalkeeper.

The glory moment finally came in the 35th minute as Maafia Nyame broke the deadlock to give coach Basigi's side the lead.

The Princesses kept surging forward for another goal but all efforts were denied by the Benin defence with the first half ending in favour of Ghana.

Back in the second half, the Black Princesses continued their attacking approach and resulted in the second goal through Mary Amponsah in the 61st minute.

The Ampem Darkoa Ladies goal poacher fed on a pass from Alormenu Helen and sent into the net beautifully to double the lead for Ghana.

Skipper Stella Nyamekye after numerous attempts, finally found her name on the scoresheet with a beautiful setpiece from the edge of the box in the 68th minute to seal the victory for Ghana.

Stella Nyamekye was named the Woman of the Match at the end of the game and Ghana will take on Cote d'Ivoire in their next game.

"In every competition, you must win if you want to advance to the next stage. The motive of our efforts is to get to the next stage and automatically, we are in the next stage.

We are going back to correct ourselves and rehearse on that so we can improve massively in our next game", coach Yussif Basigi told the press after the game.

Tournament favorites, Nigeria will take on Niger in the first game of group B on Sunday, May 21, 2023 whiles Burkina Faso takes on Togo.

This inaugural tournament is expected to prepare teams for the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup qualifiers as well as breeding talents to go represent their respective nations at the future Women African cup of nations.
