Africa suffers its second defeat at the 2023 Women's World Cup. After Zambia's heavy defeat by Japan (0-5), South Africa went down to a narrow defeat in their opening match. The reigning African champions lost to Sweden (2-1) in Group G. The South Africans opened the scoring with a Magaia strike. However, the Swedes took the lead thanks to goals from Rolfo (65th) and Ilestedt (90th). South Africa's second match is against Argentina on July 28.
