The Chicago Marathon on October 8 promises a tough field for both men and women. The best marathoners are expected to attend. A date not to be missed.
Men's table: Kipruto-Kiptum, the awaited duel
Kenya's Benson Kipruto will defend his title at the Chicago Marathon on October 8, organizers have announced. He won last year in 2:04:24, the 4th-fastest time ever achieved in Chicago. He will face stiff competition from compatriot Kelvin Kiptum.
The latter is the 2nd fastest man in history. Chicago will be a first for him. Kiptum's confidence is also boosted by his victory in this year's London Marathon. Yet his second marathon. His time of 2:01:25 was 16 seconds off the world record. Also on the start line is Ethiopia's Seifu Tura. He is the 2021 course winner and last year's runner-up. Belgian world and Olympic bronze medallist Bashir Abdi, winner of this year's Rotterdam marathon, will also be in the running.
Conner Mantz and Galen Rupp, Chicago Marathon champion in 2017 and the second-fastest American marathoner of all time, will defend the US flag. Ethiopia's Dawit Wolde, Brazil's Daniel Do Nascimento and Kenya's John Korir are among the other world-class marathoners.
Women's table: Ruth Chepngetich to defend her title
Defending champion Ruth Chepngetich will cross swords with London Marathon champion Sifan Hassan and American record-holder Emily Sisson in the women's race. In addition to this trio, Joyciline Jepkosgei, winner of the London Marathon 2021 and the New York Marathon 2019, will be making her Chicago debut, as will Genzebe Dibaba. The Ethiopian has several world records to her credit on the track, indoors and outdoors. She made her marathon debut in Amsterdam last year with a time of 2:18:05.
The US battalion also includes Olympic bronze medallist Molly Seidel, 2018 Boston Marathon champion Des Linden, Chicago 2021 finalist Emma Bates and 2020 US Olympic Trials winner Aliphine Tuliamuk.
Other notable female competitors include Ethiopia's Ababel Yesheneh and the American duo of Nell Rojas, Sara Vaughn.
