For the first time in its history, the Ethiopian national team played in the United States. The results were positive, as they won both their friendlies. The first against Guyana (2-0), on August 2 in Leesburg, Virginia, thanks to a brace from Shimelis Bekela (11th, 76th), the striker from ENPPI (Egypt).
The second came on August 6 against Loundoun United (4-2), who play in the USL Championship, the 2nd American professional division. The goals were scored by Surafel Dagnachew (30th), Shimelis Bekele (53rd), Ashalew Tamene (63rd on pen) and Yihun Endenshaw (75th).
The only blemish on the tour was the dismissal by national coach Daniel Gebremariam of Yosef Tadele and Birhanu Bekele before the first match, for disciplinary reasons.
