Rwanda - Cycling: Looming scandal at the Federation

The Rwanda Cycling Federation is currently hit by a major scandal which has led to a series of resignations, including that of the president. Some members of the federation are currently in detention.

Cycling in Rwanda is currently in the grip of a scandal.

The president of Rwanda's cycling governing body (FERWACY), Abdallah Murenzi, has resigned, New Times has learned. Murenzi is under investigation, but not yet in custody. The now ex-patron of cycling in Rwanda is e accused of making decisions based on favoritism, friendship or nepotism. He is also accused of forgery, falsification and use of forgeries, as was the case with Benoit Munyankindi, Secretary General of the Rwanda Cycling Federation. He is also suspected of having participated in these activities before being apprehended and detained for further investigation.

Rwanda Bureau of Investigation (RIB) spokesman Thierry Murangira told New Times that he "was aware of Munyankindi's actions and did not act". However, Alphonse Nkuranga, the federation's executive director, has also resigned from his post and has already handed over the reins, according to a reliable source at the Rwanda Cycling Federation."It's true that Murenzi and Nkuranga have resigned. They have both submitted their letter of resignation. Nkuranga has already handed over power," whispered one source.

Murenzi is stepping down after four years at the head of Rwanda's cycling governing body.He first took up his post on an interim basis in 2019 to replace Aimable Bayingana, who also resigned from his position at the Federation. The former president of Rayon Sports and mayor of Nyanza district was elected president of FERWACY in 2021 for a four-year term that will run until 2026.
