Tuesday September 12 saw a number of choice matches between African teams already focused on their preparations for the 2023 African Cup of Nations. Discover the evening's results.
Algeria punishes Senegal
Algeria confirms its domination over Senegal. The Fennecs came from behind to defeat the Lions (0-1) on Tuesday September 12. The largely dominated Algerians opened the scoring in the 64th minute when Riyad Mahrez headed home from a set-piece by Farès Chaïbi. The Senegalese, with plenty of possession, tried to equalize, but to no avail. Each time, the reigning African champions came up against a very compact and aggressive Algerian block. They did, however, have two great chances in injury time. Nicolas Jackson, alone in the 5.50-metre box, headed over the crossbar and Krépin Diatta saw his shot deflected by the Algerian keeper, a man of the evening with his numerous saves. The result was Senegal's first defeat at Diamniadio's Stade Abdoulaye Wade.
Morocco defeat Burkina Faso in emotional atmosphere
In a difficult context, just three days after the earthquake that killed more than 2,800 people in Morocco, the Atlas Lions faced Burkina Faso in Lens. Although the atmosphere of the match was inevitably charged with emotion, Walid Regragui's men managed to win by the narrowest of margins to honor the victims of the tragedy (1-0). The only goal came from Azzedine Ounahi (36th). It was enough, for a few moments, to bring some relief to a battered nation.
DR Congo fall to South Africa
Having qualified for the 2023 African Cup of Nations following their victory over Sudan, the DR Congo travelled to South Africa on Tuesday for a friendly match. With a largely reshuffled team, Sébastien Desabre's men fell to their opponents 1-0. The only goal of the game came from Lyle Foster (25th), who took advantage of a poor clearance from the Congolese defense following a corner. The goal was enough to keep Bafana Bafana in the lead.

Tunisia topple Egypt
Two outings and two successes for Tunisia during the September international break. After beating Botswana on the final day of the qualifiers, Tunisia got the better of Egypt in a friendly (3-1). The Carthage Eagles got off to a good start and caught their opponents cold with two goals in quick succession. After Aissa Laidouni had opened the scoring (3rd), poor Hamdi Fathi scored an own goal to give the Tunisians the lead (8th). The Pharaohs reduced the deficit before half-time thanks to Omar Kamal (34th), but the second half failed to produce an equaliser. In fact, Hamza Rafia's final goal in injury time (90th+5) gave them a bigger lead.
Côte d'Ivoire - Mali stopped by rain
The eagerly-awaited showdown between Côte d'Ivoire and Mali did not go ahead. The players failed to return from the break with the score at 0-0. The reason for this was that the pitch at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara had become impassable due to the rain. Puddles of water were located in various parts of the pitch, making it impossible to resume the match. After carrying out tests, the match commissioners and referees decided that the game could not be resumed.
