Tamira Tola won the New York Marathon on Sunday, November 4. The Ethiopian was impressive, completing the 42.195 km in 2h04mn58s. He thus set the record for the event. Tola becomes the first man to run the New York Marathon in under 2h05mins. "I'm very happy. It's the first time I've won a major marathon, which is very important for me," said Tola at the finish. He also outclassed his rivals, beating Kenya's Albert Korir (2h06mn57s) and Ethiopia's Shura Kitata (2h07mn11s) by almost two minutes.
The women's race was won by Hellen Obiri of Kenya. Unlike Tola, who won solo, Obiri won after an incredible sprint. The two-time world 5000 m champion crossed the finish line in 2h27mn23s, six seconds ahead of Ethiopia's Letsenbet Gidey (2h27mn29s). Kenyan Sharon Lokedi completed the podium in 2h27mn33s. Hellen Obiri also became the first runner to win the Boston and New York marathons in the same year since Ingrid Kristiansen in 1989.
