AFCON 2023 - Nigeria: Sadiq clears his name

Nigerian international striker Umar Sadiq was injured in a AFCON warm-up match with Nigeria. He has been ruled out of the AFCON and replaced by Onuachu. It came as a surprise to see the Nigerian play again this week for his club Real Sociedad. The player explained the situation, which is the subject of much debate."During the friendly against Guinea (January 8), I suffered a serious blow from two defenders. The medical team recommended I be replaced, but I insisted on continuing to play and finished the match. The next day, my knee swelled up. The Super Eagles medical team carried out a thorough examination, which revealed a meniscus injury. As a result, the manager decided to replace me on the basis of the medical assessment, given the uncertainties as to my fitness to take part in the AFCON," says the player.

Umar Sadiq, on his Instagram page, added: "On returning to my club, I underwent thorough examinations which revealed that I simply had a bruise. I have therefore been cleared to resume training. My special thanks go to my club, Real Sociedad, who helped me recover quickly and get back into action. Representing Nigeria is always my priority and I would be happy to return to the team. I'm sad not to be with my colleagues, but happy to see them win."
