AFCON 2029: DR Congo moves towards a bid

Côte d'Ivoire's bid to host the 2023 African Cup of Nations is clearly gaining ground. After hosting the last edition of the Games of La Francophonie in July-August 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo is now dreaming big. That, at least, is the wish of the President of the Republic. Appearing before the press at a briefing on Thursday February 22, 2024, the Head of State indicated that the country could be a candidate to host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations.

"I didn't want to say it now. But I'm sharing it with our compatriots anyway. My ambition is to organize the AFCON 2029 in the DRC. I know it's not easy, but we're going to look into this possibility with my collaborators and the Ministry of Finance and see how it can be done. If we won the Francophonie Games, we can also organize the African Cup of Nations," he said.

For the time being, the Confederation of African Football has not yet issued a call for bids for the 2029 edition. The 2025 edition will be held in Morocco, while the 2027 edition was won by the trio of Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.
