Irregular with Miami and then Toronto, Precious Achiuwa is gradually becoming an important player. The Nigerian pivot has been a regular in New York for a few weeks now, and with the numerous injuries he has suffered, he is delivering his best performances in the NBA.
One man's misfortune is another man's gain. Arriving in New York at the end of 2023 from Toronto, Precious Achiuwa was used sparingly at first. Faced with competition, the pivot saw his compatriot OG Anunoby shine on the wing (although he has been injured for several weeks). However, with the help of injuries, Achiuwa took the opportunity to become a regular for the past month. In the starting 5 for 11 games now, the 24-year-old averages 13.7 points at 55% shooting and 10.2 rebounds.
Above all, his energy really helps the Knicks get the better of the big guns. Against Philadelphia on February 23rd, he shone with a nice double-double: 18 points and 11 rebounds. A few days earlier, the former Raptor had scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against Orlando. Valuable on both sides of the court, the Nigerian explains what drives him. "It's simply a question of tenacity. Above all, it's a question of timing. I know I'm not the tallest, but I read trajectories, depending on the shot, whether it's going to go left or right. I can't explain how I make these game readings, it's all instinct," assures Precious Achiuwa, relayed by Basket USA.
Helping out before looking elsewhere?
Precious Achiuwa is conquering his world in New York.Coach Tom Thibodeau details what he appreciates in his inside player. "The versatility of his game, making quick decisions... Setting screens and moving quickly afterwards. He can also close out in a number of ways near the circle," he assures us. The team's star, Jalen Brunson, is also seduced. "We've been playing together for a while, we see how defenses play us and we read situations faster. He's very good.
Pending the return of Mitchell Robinson, the incumbent at the position, Precious Achiuwa is enjoying his time on the floor.
Next game for the former Miami and Toronto player on the night of February 26-27 against Detroit. This, perhaps, while awaiting a new departure this summer, as he will be free of any contract.
