Kenya Lionesses qualify for 2023 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup

Kenya Lionesses qualify for 2023 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup

Kenya Lionesses have qualified for the 2023 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup Championship after finishing top in the Pool B qualifiers that concluded in Kampala, Uganda on Wednesday.

After defeating Zambia 36-17 in their first match it was a must win match against the hosts Uganda Rugby She Cranes.

The Kenyan team made no mistake stopping Uganda 23-3 in a match played at the Wankulukuku Stadium in Kampala on Wednesday.

Tries from fullback Anne Goretti, winger Christabel Lindo and substitute forward Rose Otieno spurred the Lionesses. Charlotte Mudoola scored Uganda’s only penalty conversion.

“I am very delighted that my team won all the two matches and now we have qualified for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup Championship. We need to keep working hard because we must prepare a very strong team going into the main tournament,” said Kenya’s coach Dennis Mwanja.

While Kenya emerged champions with nine points, the Uganda Rugby She Cranes finished second with five points.

Kenya’s Lionesses will be joined by Pool “A” winners South Africa, Madagascar, who won Pool “C” and Pool “D” winners Burkina Faso in the Championship next year.

The Championship will be used as an African qualifier for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup.
