Tobi Amusan: Nigeria hurdler emerges 2022 Africa's best female Athlete

Tobi Amusan tops African Athletics rankings

Nigeria Athletics' rave of the moment, Tobi Amusan has been named Best Female Athlete in Africa for 2022 by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) following a record-breaking campaign in the past 11 months.

In 2022, Amusan became Nigeria's first World Champion when she set a new world record of 12.12 secs to win the 100m hurdles at World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States.

Amusan is also African Championship, Diamond League, and Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles champion with competition record time respectively in 2022 alone to emerge number one female athlete on the continent.

The 25-year-old hurdler is ranked first on the continent, according to the list released by the athletics continental body which saw the Nigerian topping the female category, closely followed by Faith Kipyegon of Kenya.

The trio of Letesenbeth Gidey, Goytom Gbreslase and Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia occupied the third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

Two weeks ago, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the American hurdler and sprinter, has been named the women's world athlete of the year ahead of Amusan.

Reacting to the development, President of the Confederation of African Athletics, CAA Region II, Engr. Ibrahim Shehu Gusau has hailed the best-ranked athletes, coaches and technical officials for the year 2022.

According to Engr. Gusau, the commitment and resilience of those selected typified the “African Spirit” of always striving to be the best.

I congratulate those who made the CAA's list as the best in Africa. The commitment and resilience of those of you selected typify the African Spirit of always striving to be the best.

"As you all are aware, what makes a champion is the consistency and the quest to always pull the rabbit out of the hat; look beyond 2022," the statement read.

“On behalf of CAA Region II, I want to congratulate you for being the beacon of victory in Africa. Let's do more in the years ahead.
