Qatar 2022: Indomitable Lions newboy Jerome Ngom oozes confidence

On fertile form in Cameroon’s friendly match (1-1) against Jamaica in Yaoundé, Jérôme Ngom Mbekeli was, everyone’s surprise inclusion in Rigobert Song’s list to take part in the World Cup in Qatar. Just two home based players from Cameroon's Elite football league got the call up for the journey to Qatar.

Mute since his call up, the Colombe of Dja player came out of silence during an interview published by FECAFOOT TV on Thursday.

After talking through his career, the 24-year-old striker explained how his call up came about: “I learned of my selection after the match against Jamaica. I was in the bus with my other teammates and we followed live the publication of the list of selected players for the World Cup by coach Rigobert.

‘To be sincere, I did not expect to be selected. After listening to my name, I jumped for joy on the bus. I was so surprised. Until now, I continue to give thanks to God,” Ngom said.

In a further exchange, the Ecole de Foot graduate gave his personal ambitions for the competition: “I am very happy to be amongst these great players. It is an opportunity for us to learn alongside them and in all humility and respect.

“Our ambitions are to do a good competition and why not, bring the trophy back to Cameroon. I continue to dream because I want to be part of the starters or to play a few minutes during this competition in order to show what I am capable of,” he added before thanking the president of FECAFOOT: “I thank Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation for his support because he always asked us to dream. Ngom concluded.
