Qatar 2022: President Biya sends message to Indomitable Lions prior to WC opener

Cameroon’s president, H.E Paul Biya has written to the Indomitable Lions beseeching them to continue the good work at the World Cup just they did in the qualifiers.

In a letter written to the captain Vincent Aboubakar, Biya demands commitment, discipline and determination as the Lions are set to make their 8th World Cup finals in Doha.

‘On 24 November, the national senior football team will play its first game at the 22nd edition of the Qatar world cup 2022. In the same competition, the indomitable Lions have, in the past, written the most beautiful pages of African and world football, playing against formidable opponents.

‘The brilliant qualification of our national team for this prestigious tournament, which brings together the 32 best football nations of the moment, bears testimony to the exceptional qualities of our valiant Indomitable Lions.

‘As you prepare to take to the pitch, I wish to extend to you, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Cameroonian people, that you show a hearty commitment, determination and discipline, in order to raise the flag of Cameroon higher,’ the country’s Head of State opined.

During Biya’s reign as president, the indomitable Lions have won 5-AFCON trophies, one Olympic gold medal, attained the World Cup quarter-finals and the FIFA Confederations Cup final.

Just last month, President Paul Biya bagged a personal accolade at the Cameroonian Ballon d’Or ceremony.

He won the special prize for supporting the development of football in Cameroon at the event which took place in the Palais des Congrès, Yaounde. The special award was aimed at rewarding all the efforts of the President of the Republic for the development of Cameroonian football.

The award came as a result of the creation of the national football academy (Anafoot) in 2014, the construction of stadiums, the proper organization of major African tournaments including CHAN 2020 and AFCON 2021.

Cameroon starts its World Cup campaign on November 24 against Switzerland on Thursday. The Lions will be looking to win their first game in the competition since 2002.
