Ethiopia’s Sikiyas Abate Misganaw and Mercyline Chelangat (Uganda) came out top in the PKO Poznań Half Marathon 2022 which ended in Poland on Sunday.
Misganaw recorded his personal best time of 1:00:49 to beat fellow countryman Tafere Adisu. The 21 year-old Misganaw was making his return after three years.
Kenya’s Shadrack Chesir who was also making his debut in the 14th edition of the Poznań race came third with a time of 1:01:27. “I am happy to start the new season with a win. It was a very competitive race,” said Misganaw.
In the women’s category 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Chelangat was in better form to win the race.
The 24 year-old battled the 2021 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon champion, Lydia Simiyu and Ethiopia’s Addisalem Tegegn.
Chelangat won the race with a personal best time of 1:08.27. Simiyu was forced to settle in second as she crossed the line fifty six seconds later.
Kenya’s Lilian Lelei and Izabela Paszkiewicz from Poland finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 1:11.05 and 1:11.18 respectively.
Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told Sports News Africa that Chelengat’s win is a good start as she prepares ahead of the Commonwealth Games. “Taking part in these international events and winning is good for our athletes,” added Otuchet.
