Tanzania Premier League: Giants Young Africans and Simba share spoils

Arch-rivals Young Africans SC and Simba SC settled for a 1-1 draw in a 2022/2023 Tanzania Premier League match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

The two giants went into the match after picking contrasting results a few days ago in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, with Simba Sc making it to the group stage, while Young Africans were eliminated by Sudan’s Al Hilal.

It was an explosive atmosphere with over 40,000 spectators at the Stadium as Simba SC took the lead after 14 minutes.

Simba SC found the Young Africans defending department flat footed before a well placed Clatous Chota Chama’s pass was cleverly placed by Nigerian import Augustine Okrah.

The match continued with fewer chances created in front of goal, but lots of tackles flying in. At the stroke of half time the reigning champions Young Africans SC leveled matters to send their fans into jubilations. Stephano Aziz Ki’s well taken free kick beat Simba SC’s goalkeeper Aishi Manula.

In the second half the two teams tried to create some scoring opportunities, but failed to convert them. The referee booked Young Africans’ Faisal Salum and Khalid Aucho, Young Africans also had Augustine Okrah and Mazamiru Yassin booked.

Juma Mgunda, the Simba SC caretaker coach said that although they wanted to win the match, getting one point from a big match is fair. “We shall keep working hard ahead of the other matches in the League,” added Mgunda.

Last season the two teams drew goalless in the two league matches.

The result leaves both teams tied on 14 points with Simba on the top of the log due to a superior goal difference compared to their arch rivals Young Africans.
