Tanzania Premier League: Young Africans SC defeat Kagera to reclaim top spot

Young Africans SC have reclaimed top spot on the 2022/2023 Tanzania Premier League table after a hard fought 1-0 away win against Kagera SC on Sunday.

Fresh from ejecting Tunisia’s Club Africian to qualify for the ground stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, Young Africans SC traveled to the CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza with lots of confidence.

After 18 minutes Clement Mzize gave Young Africans SC the lead on the wet playing surface. The home side tried to fight back but failed to find the target.

In the second half Young African’s goalkeeper Djigui Diarra saved Kagera’s penalty kick taken by Erick Mwijage. The same day Mbeya City FC and Coastal Union settled for a 2-2 draw.

Sixtus Sabilo netted a brace for the home side, while Greyson Gwalala and Hamd Majimengi scored for Coastal Union.

Last Saturday Azam FC struggled to stop Mtibwa FC 4-3. Idris Mbombo netted two goals for Azam FC in the first 30 minutes, and Abdallah Kheri made it 3-0 going into the break. Adam Adam pulled back a goal for Mtibwa after 61 minutes.

But Daniel Amoah made it 4-1 for Azam FC. Adam Adam and Nassor Kiziwa scored two more goals for Mtibwa FC. Simba SC also picked a 1-0 win against Ihefu SC with Pape Sakho netting the lone goal.

Young Africans SC who have played nine matches now are top of the log with 23 points, while Azam Fc who have played 11 matches are in second place with the same number of points, but a lower goal difference. Simba SC are third on the log with 21 points from 10 matches played.
