Tanzania - Young Africans maintain their championship lead

The Tanzanian Premier league gets into the final stretch and the games come in quick. Yanga are leading in the tittle race but are closely tailed by eternal rivals Simba in a two horse race.

Striker Meddie Kagere netted a goal in added time to ensure Simba SC picked a vital 2-1 against Coastal Union FC in a NBC Tanzania Premier League match played in Mwakwani, Tanga on Thursday.

Fresh from qualifying for the quarter final stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, Simba SC came into the match determined to pick maximum points to keep the pressure on table leaders Young Africans SC.

Ghanaian import Bernard Morrison netted to give the reigning champions the lead after 40 minutes.

But after the interval Victor Patrick Akpan leveled matters for the Coastal Union FC to send the home fans into serious celebrations. Simba continued to attack and create several scoring opportunities but found a strong defending line.

After three added minutes a defensive blunder gave Rwandan International Kagere space to tap to make it 2-1.

The win sends Simba SC to 40 points, 11 points behind rivals Young Africans who have played a game more at 19.

On Wednesday Young Africans SC extended their lead after a hard fough 2-1 win away to third placed Azam FC at the Azam Complex. Rodgers Kola gave Azam FC the lead after 11 minutes, before Shaban Djuma leveled matters six minutes later from the spot.

In the second half in-form Fiston Mayele finished off perfectly with a well-timed volley after 78 minutes. Biashara United also moved to 10th place after a 1-0 win against bottom placed Mbeya Kwanza FC in a match played in Nyamagano, Mwanza.
