Women’s Championship to kick start CECAFA 2022 calendar

Women’s Championship to kick start CECAFA 2022 calendar

The Senior Women’s Championship will kick start the 2022 calendar of the Council of East and Central Women’s Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).

Auka Gecheo, the Executive Director confirmed to Sports News Africa that the CECAFA Senior Championship will take place in Uganda from May 22 to June 5th.

“This tournament will also help fine tune our two representatives Burundi and Uganda who qualified to play in the Women’s AFCON 2022 to take place in Morocco,” added Gecheo.

The Executive Director added that the region will have seven tournaments in the year. Gecheo made it clear that the CECAFA Executive Committee met via zoom last week and evaluated bids before a final decision was reached on which members will host the events.

He said although the dates for the other tournaments have not yet been picked, they have communicated with the different hosts and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to find the best timing.

Besides hosting the Senior Women’s Championship, Uganda will also host the inaugural zonal qualifiers for the CAF Pan Africa Schools Cup.

Ethiopia will host the AFCON U-17 qualifiers, while Sudan who have not hosted any CECAFA competition for eight years now will host the AFCON U-20 qualifiers.

Tanzania will host the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers, CECAFA U-23 Championship/AFCON U-23 qualifiers and the CECAFA Kagame Cup.
