AFCON 2021: Debutant David Abagna speaks on his inclusion in the squad

David Abagna- Real Tamale United captain

Captain of Real Tamale United (RTU) David Abagna, says it is a dream come true for him to be named in the 30-man provisional Black Stars squad ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The current top scorer of the Ghana Premier League registered eight goals so far in the on going 2021/2022 season.

Speaking to a local radio station on his maiden call up, the former AshantiGold striker said.

To be named in the Black Star team for AFCON is going to be crazy and I won’t be able to get the words to describe the feeling if I find my name in the squad. You can even imagine what it would mean for me from where I’m from”.

Even in Tamale here, the number of players here is a lot, how much more Ghana and we have so many professionals who even play outside. To get the opportunity to be named in the squad is just going to be wow. It is a dream come true”, he added.

The 23-year old has played nine league matches for his club, scoring eight goals with two goals.

He is part of the five home-based players that were named in the Black Stars  provisional squad to start camping in Qatar ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

The team will start camping on Thursday, December 23, 2021 in Doha for a period of three weeks to prepare for the tournament scheduled for Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022.

The Black Stars will play three friendly matches while in Qatar. The Ghana Football Association has already concluded talks with Algeria while engagements are on-going for two additional matches.
