The Super Eagles of Nigeria will this evening face Sudan in a Group D match at the on-going TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021 in Cameroon.
It will be the second time the two teams return to the Roumde Adjia, Garoua after Nigeria stopped Egypt 1-0 in their opening match, while Sudan drew 0-0 against Burkina Faso.
But Sudan’s national head coach Burhan Tia has made it clear that this match is very important to them and they must come all out and prove a point.
“Nigeria should not take us for granted because they won the first match. We know they are a good team, but they must be reminded that it will not be easy at all,” said the veteran coach.
Tia made it clear that he has watched the Nigerian team and knows how they will be handled. “We need to play as a unit and also make sure we take our chances to score,” explained the coach.
Tia said that although Sudan has won the AFCON before, it is time that they returned to the top by playing well and getting to the later stages of the competition. “We deserve to be among the top teams and this can be achieved if we continue to work hard,” added Tia.
Sudan’s Falcons of Jediane and Nigeria will be meeting for the third time at the AFCON. In the first encounter Sudan stopped Nigeria 4-0 in the 1963 group phase, while the Super Eagles picked a 1-0 win in 1976.
Record AFCON winners Egypt who have lifted the trophy seven times will also return to action in a Group D match at the same Stadium against Guinea Bissau.
