A totally shocking scenario in Group D. Ghana held on to a 2-0 lead over Mozambique until the 90th minute, when they conceded the equaliser (2-2). Egypt, on their part, accompany Cape Verde into the 8th round after the two teams drew (2-2).
Ghana squander a two-goal lead
Despite the huge disappointment that followed their side's humiliation by Equatorial Guinea, Ivorian fans have certainly been keeping an eye on the Group B matches. This will surely remain the case until they are officially eliminated or qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group phase of AFCON 2023. At half-time of the two Group B matches, they no doubt regained hope and had a few drinks, as the results were in their favor.
At half-time, Ghana were leading Mozambique 1-0 thanks to a penalty converted by Jordan Ayew (15th) and Egypt, third at the time with just two points, were trailing Cape Verde 1-0 after Benchimol's opener (45th). But things quickly turned sour for the Ivorians after the break. The Egyptians equalized 1-1 in the 50th minute with a Trezeguet goal. They remained in third place at that point, but moved ahead of Côte d'Ivoire in the best-of-three standings. But it was Ghana who gave the Elephants hope.
After scoring a second goal from the penalty spot, again through Jordan Ayew (70th), the Ghanaians went down in injury time. They were pegged back by Mozambique 2-2 after a penalty converted by Catamo (90th+1) and a header by Reinildo (90th+4). The end of the match between Egypt and Cape Verde was just as crazy. The Pharaohs, believing they had secured their first AFCON victory after a goal by Mostafa Mohamed (90th+3), conceded an equaliser five minutes later (90th+8).As a result, Egypt, with three points, take 2nd place and join Cape Verde (7 pts) in the last eight, while Ghana bids farewell to the competition with just two points.
