AFCON 2023: Leopards and Chipolopolos square out

AFCON 2023: Leopards and Chipolopolos square out

There has been no 0-0 draws in the first 12 matches of the AFCON 2023. DR Congo and Zambia ended the first day with a 1-1 draw in Group F.

RD Congo is back at the AFCON. After missing out on the 2021 edition in Cameroon, they left the 2019 edition of AFCON with a 4-0 win over Zimbabwe. A fine victory, but a pointless one, as the Leopards had already lost their first two group matches and were eliminated. Wednesday night, on the first day of Group F, they were celebrating against Zambia. They shared the points 1-1.

The Leopards skated to a halt, conceding a gag goal that is sure to make the rounds on social networks.Congolese goalkeeper Lionel M'pasi, who had made a very poor exit, was surprised by the Zambians' quick throw-in, who scored thanks to Kings Kangwa (23rd). But Sébastien Desabre's men were in no doubt for long. Four minutes after conceding the opening goal, DR Congo equalized through a fine team move. Cédric Bakambu took advantage of a fine opening from Gael Kakuta, cushioned the ball with his chest and sent a low cross into the penalty area. The Zambian keeper missed, leaving Yoane Wissa, who had followed the action well, to score into an empty net (27th). 1-1, that was the score at half-time.

After the break, no further goals were scored. The Leopards largely dominated the last 45 minutes, but were clumsy in their finishing every time. Morocco are now top of Group F following their 3-0 victory over Tanzania.
