AFCON 2023: Morocco stroll past Tanzania

Morocco kicked off the AFCON 2023 with a victory. Favourites for this 34th edition, the Atlas Lions easily overcame Tanzania in Group F (3-0). Captain Romain Saiss, Azzedine Ounahi and Youssef En-Nesyri scored the Moroccan goals.

Morocco easily won their first match in Group F of the AFCON 2023. The Atlas Lions didn't need much effort to beat Tanzania. The Moroccans dominated the Taifa Stars throughout the match. They opened the scoring with their first real chance of the match, a strike from captain Romain Saiss (30th). After a well-executed free-kick from Hakim Ziyech, the Tanzanian keeper Manula pushed the ball back into the path of Saiss, who then had to finish alone in front of goal. The semi-finalists of the last World Cup made several attempts to break the deadlock, but to no avail. With the score at 1-0, the two teams returned to the dressing room.

 

Morocco more clinical in the second half

The Moroccans were more realistic in the second half.Completely disoriented, Tanzania even finished the match with 10 men.Already cautioned in the first half, Novatus Miroshi picked up a second yellow card for a late tackle on Azzedine Ounahi. He was sent off. The Atlas Lions took advantage of the situation and wrapped up the match in the final minutes. After a fine team move, Ounahi leaned on Adli, who passed the ball back to him with the first intention. With the flat of his right foot, the Olympique Marseille midfielder put the ball in the back of the net (78th). En-Nesyri stunned the Tanzanians two minutes later (80th).Morocco are off to a perfect start at AFCON 2023, where they are aiming for a second continental crown.
