AFCON 2023 - Nayef Aguerd: "All the African teams want to beat us"

In an interview with Being Sport, Nayef Aguerd talks about his performances for West Ham and his goals for the Atlas Lions at AFCON 2023.

Nayef Aguerd feels at home at West Ham.At least that's what the Moroccan defender, who has made 16 appearances including a goal for the Hammers this season, has to say."A positive performance so far compared to last season. West Ham have made some good signings that have breathed new life into the squad. The Premier League is a tough league that takes time for players to adapt to," explained the Atlas Lions defender in an interview with Being Sport.

At West Ham, Nayef Aguerd is reunited with another North African, Algerian Said Benrahma. And the two players enjoy an excellent relationship. "We're good friends. And it's a source of pride for both of us that the Arab public follows West Ham's games to hear from us," said the Atlas Lion.

Aguerd praises Regragui

The West Ham defender also spoke of Morocco's ambitions at the AFCON 2023. Semi-finalists at the 2022 World Cup, Morocco are aiming for a second title in Côte d'Ivoire. And the Atlas Lions are determined to make it happen. All the more so as they can count on their coach Walid Regragui, who has made huge changes to the squad, reveals Nayef Aguerd. "Walid Regragui has changed the mentality of the national team. There are no stars in the group. The star remains the group. The World Cup success in Qatar is the fruit of this change brought about by the coach. It's thanks to the spirit of the group that we triumphed," says the Moroccan central defender.

Winning the continental title will be no mean feat for the Atlas Lions. They face stiff competition from African champions Senegal, hosts Côte d'Ivoire and Algeria. And Nayef Aguerd is well aware of this. "After reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup and beating Brazil, all the African teams want to beat us. We need to go into this AFCON with confidence, but also with a sense of modesty. That's what will enable us to achieve our goal," concluded the Lion of the Atlas.
