AFCON 2023Q: Osimhen's quadruple as Nigeria slams Sao Tome and Principe - Highlights

Nigeria
Osimhen shines for Super Eagles

Victor Osimhen scored four goals as Nigeria thrashed Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in the Moroccan city of Agadir on Monday.

The Super Eagles went into their second qualification match following a superb start to their campaign with a come-from behind 2-1 victory over Sierra Leone last week and José Santos Peseiro's first competitive fixture in charge.

Osimhen, who grabbed the winner against the Leone Stars opened the floodgates of goals with a powerful header off Moses Simon's cross, leaving goalkeeper Anastacio Braganca helpless in the ninth minute.

Ola Aina located Osihmen with a perfect pullout before the latter laid superbly for Simon to tap beyond the flailing hands of Braganca for Nigeria’s second goal of the match in the 28th minute.

After blowing up two excellent opportunities inside four minutes, Moffi eventually made up for his misses when he dribbled two defenders to blast into the net off a fine pass from Osimhen two minutes from the half time break.

On the return from recess, Osimhen’s header off Lookman's pull out increased the visitors tally to four three minutes after the restart before Oghenekaro Etebo fired his 20 –yard free-kick into the net for Nigeria’s fifth in 55th minute.

On the hour mark, substitute Ahmed Musa, only required two minutes on the pitch to find an onrushing Sanusi whose cross found Terem Moffi well-placed to fire in Nigeria’s sixth. Three minutes later, Ademola Lookman got his first international goal with Nigeria as he chipped over onrushing goalie Braganca.

Osimhen notched his treble in the 65th minute and the Eagles' eighth when he was set up by Musa before the latter teed up Osimhen in the right place to score his fourth and Nigeria’s ninth and substitute Emmanuel Dennis won and converted a penalty kick on the brink of regulation time to wrap up the goal feast for the West Africans.

Nigeria have now made it two wins out of two matches to sit top of Group A with six points and a +10 goal difference and the Super Eagles' next games are against Guinea-Bissau home and away in September.
