The head coach of Al Ahly SC, Pitso Mosimane has said it will be nice to face his former Club Mamelodi Sundowns in the group stage of the 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
In the draw conducted this afternoon in Cairo, Egypt, the defending champions Al Ahly were placed in Group A alongside the South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and the two Sudan teams Al Merreiekh and Al Hilal.
“It is nice to play Mamelodi again. We beat them the last two times we met. Let us see what happens this time. But playing the two Sudan teams away is also not an easy task,” said Mosimane who helped in conducting the draw together with Khaled Nassar, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Head of Competitions.
Mosimane, who won the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League trophy with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 and twice with Al Ahly also made it clear that they have what it takes to win the trophy for a third straight time.
“Our team has a good history of winning and every time we want to win the next trophy,” added the South African born coach.
Morocco’s Raja Casablanca who were beaten a week ago by Al Ahly in the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup have been placed in Group B together with Horoya AC (Guinea), ES Setif (Algeria) and South Africa’s AmaZulu FC who are handled by former South African international Benni McCarthy.
Two Tunisian sides Espérance Sportive de Tunis and E.S Sahel have been placed in Group C alongside CR Belouizdad (Algeria) and Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy.
Zamalek, the reigning Egyptian Premier League champions, will face Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) and two Angola teams Atletico Petroleos and GD Sagrada Esperanca.
