The second leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals was played on Saturday April 6. Five years on, TP Mazembe are back in the last four after beating Petro Luanda 1-2. Esperance Tunis, meanwhile, saw off ASEC Mimosas (0-0, 2-4 Pen).

TP Mazembe in the CAF LDC semi-finals 5 years on

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the CAF CL in front of their home fans, Tout-Puissant Mazembe needed to achieve something special away from home. In this quarter-final second leg, the Corbeaux did not miss the opportunity to return to the semi-finals after 5 years. However, the Corbeaux conceded the opening goal in the 29th minute from Jonathan Toro. Just as all the stars were aligned for the Angolans, who were ahead on the scoreboard for much of the match, TP Mazembe turned the game on its head. The Congolese persisted, and managed to equalize in the 82nd minute. With the Petro Luanda stadium in doubt, TP Mazembe struck the fatal blow with Joel Beya's goal in the final minutes (90th +6). The win sees the Crows join reigning champions Al Ahly in the semi-finals of the CAF CL.

In the second match of the evening, Asec Mimosas fell at home to Esperance de Tunis on penalties. In this second leg of the CAF CL, the Ivorians were hoping to pull off an upset in front of the Félicia crowd. But the Sang et Or's experience got the better of them. In a very tight encounter, neither team managed to gain the advantage they had in the first leg. A penalty shoot-out was therefore inevitable. Esperance Tunis had a card up their sleeve: Amenallah Memmich. The 19-year-old Tunisian goalkeeper saved shots from Christian Koffi and Salifou Diarrassouba. His team-mates, for their part, were clinical and skilful on all their attempts. Esperance Tunis are now through to the semi-finals and will face Mamelodi Sundowns.
