Comoros - Head coach: Sunday Oliseh among many candidates

The resignation of Amir Abdou from his post as Comoros coach will force the island's federation to quickly find a successor. A decision could be taken this week.

Amir Abdou was the longest serving coach in Africa, and his resignation has obviously not gone unnoticed in Comoros. But also in other countries, including Mauritania, where his CV is of real interest. Appointed in January 2014, Abdou decided to turn the page, after the good performance of the Coelacanths in Cameroon during the AFCON 2021 (16th final), waiting to open another.

Said Ali Athoumane, the president of the Comorian Federation, expected the departure of the man who is still the coach of FC Nouadhibou (Mauritania). "I was almost certain that he would leave, since the end of the competition. I know that he is being approached and that he has ambitions to coach another team. I know that he has been approached and that he has ambitions to coach another team. He spent eight years at the helm of the Comoros national team, so I can understand that he wants to do something else," explained the manager.

"No contact with Claude Le Roy''

Since Abdou announced his departure, Athoumane has received several applications, including those of Frenchmen Jean-Marc Nobilo and Dominique Carlier, Nigerian Sunday Oliseh and Ivorian Ibrahim Kamara. Moroccan Younes Zerdouk, who was Abou's assistant, is also a candidate. "There are others, from Africa, from the Netherlands" confirms the president of the Federation.

Sebastien Migné, who had also sent his CV to Moroni, is no longer in the running, as he was appointed on Monday as assistant to Rigobert Song, the new coach of Cameroon. "I also read that Claude Le Roy was a possibility, but I had no contact with him," Athouman continued, a statement confirmed by the former Togo coach. "I have not had any direct contact with any technician. I have received letters of application, agents have called me, but nothing has been decided. We have scheduled a meeting of the Executive Committee this Tuesday afternoon, where we will study all the applications. I think we will take a decision in the following days.'' he said.

The Comoros will indeed host Ethiopia on March 25 in a friendly match at the Stade Omnisports de Malouzini, and then begin the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Côte d'Ivoire next June. "This match against Ethiopia is important because it will probably be the only one before the June matches. There may be new players who will join the team if the new coach decides. We want to take the necessary time to choose the new coach, but we also know that we should not delay too much, because the schedule is tight..."
