Date and venue fixed for 2022 Nigeria Football Federation Elective Congress

Pinnick set to get successor

A date and venue have been set for the 2022 Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Elective Congress, SportNewsAfrica can exclusively report.

The Elective Congress, which will usher in new executives for the administration of football in Nigeria, has been scheduled for 30 September, 2022 in Benin City, Edo State.

The date and venue of the aniticipated elective congress were among the key decisions made at the Annual General Assembly on Thursday, August 18 at the Best Western Hotel in Lagos.

The elections into the NFF Executive Committee will now hold on Friday, 30th September 2022, 10 days after the expiration of the current administration led by President Amaju Melvin Pinnick. The new tenure will hold from 2022 to 2026.

SportNewsAfrica scooped that the outgoing board, led by Pinnick, had attempted to move the elections to October, but the attempt was vehemently rejected by most Congressmen, majorly comprising of the 36 State FA chairmen.

Instead, the Congress, which included representatives from the Leagues, the Coaches Association, the Referees Association, the Players’ Union, invited observers NFF Management and Staff, and several other stakeholders resolved for the elective congress on 30 September, having declined the proposed election date of 20 October.

The upcoming NFF Elective Congress is expected to produce a new President following the confirmation to the Congressmen on Thursday that incumbent President Pinnick will not be seeking a third term.

“As I stand before you today (Thursday), I want to thank the Congress for what they have done for Nigeria football in the last 8 years,"Pinnick told the Congress in Lagos to effectively clear every iota of doubt surrounding his ambition to remain in office.

“I want to leave Congress as one unit the way it was handed to me in 2014. I want to say it here that I am not going to contest for the NFF President again.”

Pinnick, who has been in charge as NFF president since 2014, is the first Nigerian to hold the position for two terms and his second term is schedule to elapse on 20 September, 2022.

SNA understands that election roadmap, including appointment of electoral and appeals committees will be made in the coming days with timetable, for sales of form and screening of candidates.
