Ethiopia will win CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship title – Coach Asefa

The head coach of Ethiopia has said his team will emerge champions of the regional CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2022.

Uganda is hosting the regional tournament at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

Speaking after his team drew 2-2 against Tanzania in a Group B match played today, Coach Firew Hailegebral Asefa said his team is a class apart and will win the trophy.

“We won the first match 5-0 against Zanzibar and now have drawn 2-2 with Tanzania. But I am not worried because I know we shall also beat South Sudan and qualify for the semi finals,” added a confident Asefa.

The coach said that his team is very solid in all departments. “We shall work hard to make sure we take this trophy to Ethiopia like we did with the Women’s U-20 trophy we lifted at the same Stadium last year,” added the head coach of the Ethiopian team.

In the game played today Ethiopia took the lead on two occasions, but failed to maintain the lead.

Skipper Loza Abera and Mesay Temesgen Tanga scored for Ethiopia while Opa Clement and Enekia Kasonga Lunyamila got the goals for Tanzania.

Abera put Ethiopia in the lead after 8 minutes when she beat Tanzania’s advancing goalkeeper Yonah Gelwa. But Clement capitalized on a defensive lapse for Ethiopia to equalize for Tanzania after 28 minutes.

Tanga netted the second goal for Ethiopia with a fine strike. But it was defender Lunyimila who made sure Tanzania picked a point when she equalized with a freekick taken from 40 yards away.

While Uganda and Burundi have already qualified for the semi final stage, both Tanzania and Ethiopia will wait on the final day of the group matches on Monday to confirm their qualification to the knockout stage.
