The Cameroon football federation FECAFOOT has seen very unstable times financially in recent years. Huge sums of money has been paid the the body either to former coaches or in law suits concerning FECAFOOT and other individuals, Cameroonians as well as foreigners.
The latest episode came this week and it involved FECAFOOT and the former Indomitable Lions head coach
Toni Conceiçao got his way.
He was dismissed as Cameroon coach after the 2021 African Cup of Nations, but he challenged his dismissal with FIFA and demanded compensation just like the law stipulates. The world body of football has just ruled in the dispute between the Portuguese and the Cameroon Football Federation and decided in favor of Conceiçao. Judged guilty of "abusive breach of contract", the Fécafoot was ordered to pay 1.6 million euros in compensation to its former coach, or a little over a billion CFA francs. The Cameroonian side has 45 days to appeal or implement the decision. No word yet from the Federation who clearly has no choice than to pay the money.
The situation has raised some dust within the sports community in Cameroon. Journalists and football analysts have once again decried the situation as Cameroon in the past five years has spent over 2 billion frs CFA on such cases,
Former coaches Clarence Seedorf and Kluivert were compensated hugely for breaching their contracts while Hugo Broos also received over 100 million frs CFA when he was sacked as coach of the Indomitable Lions.
