After a complicated Premier League season that led to their relegation, these Southampton and Leicester players could be on their way to a new club this summer. But in England, relegation does not necessarily mean losing your best players.
Kamaldeen Sulemana is one of the most talented African players of his generation in the squad of clubs relegated to the Championship (Leeds, Leicester, Southampton). After a complicated second year at Rennes, the 21-year-old was sent to a struggling club for €25 million in January. The Ismaila Sarr case, which shows that English clubs are financially independent, could add further weight to a transfer of Sulemana, who Southampton could count on to return to the Premier League.
Initially tipped by many observers as a good transfer target, Joe Aribo has been unable to flourish at the Saints due to a lengthy injury. Having led Rangers to the Europa League final after 70 games last season, the Nigerian has been unable to add value to the squad. According to rumours, Galatasaray are interested in the 26-year-old attacking midfielder.
Contracts coming to an end
Wilfried Ndidi has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League for several seasons now. Especially when he's in full possession. But until now, no club has been prepared to break the bank. This time, clubs such as Napoli are said to be interested in his situation, with a year to go before the end of his contract with Leicester. His team-mate Nampalys Mendy has reached the end of his contract and his departure has been made official by the club. The African champion is capable of making a modest club happy at the age of 30 and returning to regular football. Perhaps a return to Ligue 1 would do him good.
Not always a starter but often decisive when needed, Kelechi Iheanacho's stint with the 2016 champions may leave him with many regrets. Valued at €17 million by transfermarkt, the Nigeria international still has a lot to give at the top level. With a year to go before the end of his contract, he is no doubt aware of the stiff competition for his place in the Nigeria squad and will have to fight hard to take part in the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
