Football: St. George win Ethiopia Premier League title

St. George have been crowned champions of the 2021/2022 BetKing Ethiopia Premier League.

The St. George team that has been top of the log for most of the season humbled Addis Ababa City FC 4-0 in their last match of the League on Friday at the Bahir Dar International Stadium.

After 30 matches played St. George finished with 65 points, ahead of Fasil Kanema FC who lost and finished with 61 points.

Togolese import Ismail Ouro-Agoro gave St. George the lead after 16 minutes, before he again struck a penalty in the 54th minute after he was brought down in the box.

Amanuel Grebremichael also netted two late goals to make sure the St. George fans had a lot more to cheer for. Addis Ababa FC tried to push forward, but found Ugandan International Charles Lukwago a rock in the goal.

“I am happy to win my first League trophy with St.George after joining the Club a few months ago,” said Lukwago who transferred from Uganda's KCCA FC.

It was a bad day for the 2020/2021 champions Fasil Kenema FC who lost 3-2 to Dire Dawa Ketema SC. The win for Dire Dawa Ketema means they survived relegation.

The League will climax today with three matches on card as Jimma Aba Jifar FC face Mekelakeya SC, Sidama Bunna SC take on Hadiya Hossana FC. Ethiopia Bunna SC will also battle Bahir Dar Ketema FC.
