London Marathon: Kelvin Kiptum brushes past Kipchoge's world record

The London Marathon kept all its promises. Four of the five fastest athletes in history were on the starting line. Kelvin Kiptum won the race, setting the second fastest time in history. In the women's race, it was also a star-studded race. It is the beginner Sifan Hassan who wins in 2h18mn33s.

Kelvin Kiptum was stratospheric at the London Marathon. The Kenyan outclassed his opponents. Yet the race brought together the best in the discipline. Only Eliud Kipchoge missed the call. The world record holder preferred to compete in Boston where he finished 6th. But in London, his compatriot Kiptum came close to his world record. The Kenyan crossed the finish line in 2h01mn27s, the second fastest time in history. Kiptum is only 18 seconds away from the world record. Just incredible! He finished far ahead of his compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor (2h04mn23s) and Ethiopian Tamirat Tola (2h04mn59s), world champion of the discipline.

The Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele could not follow the pace set by Kiptum. The Ethiopian gave up with more than 10 km to go. On the other hand, the British Mohamed Farah finished 9th in 2h10mn28s

Among the women, the field was also very strong. And the marathon has a new queen. It is Sifan Hassan. For her debut on the distance, the Dutchwoman of Ethiopian origin has signed a beautiful feat. She won the London Marathon with Brio in 2h18mn33s. She won the sprint ahead of the Ethiopian Alemu Megertu (2h18mn37s) and the Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir (2h18mn38s). The 42.195 km world record holder, Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, retired after a few minutes. Olympic runner-up and world record holder Brigid Kosgei dropped out just three minutes after the start due to a leg injury.
