Uganda’s Jas Mangat and his navigator Joseph Kamya on Sunday won the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally 2022.
Mangat driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 10 dominated the Rally from the start to the end.
The Pearl of Africa Rally 2022 that took place May 6-8th and attracted 49 drivers saw only 34 manage to complete.
“ I am very happy that after careful driving right from Day 1 we have managed to win the Pearl of Africa Rally again. I won the same rally in 2013 and winning it again is a good feeling,” said Mangat after the Rally.
Zambia’s duo of Gomes Leroy Gabriel and navigator Gomes Urshilla in a Ford Fiesta settled for second place, while another foreign crew of Davite Giancarlo (Rwanda) and Vindevogel Slyvia (Burundi) finished in third position. “It was a very tough rally, but we are happy to finish in second position,” said Gomes Leroy Gabriel.
Mangat’s win sends him top of the Africa Rally Championship table with 30 points, while Gomes Leroy Gabriel is in second place with 24 points.
“This was a very competitive Rally and the heavy rain also made it very tricky. But we have many more events to come in the season where we are hoping to register good results,” said Gomes Leroy Gabriel.
The Rally attracted foreign crews from Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Zambia. The event was not held in 2020 and 2021 because of the challenges of COVID-19 which generally affected sports.
