With their backs against the wall, Cameroon pulled off a Remontada against Uganda. The Indomitable Lionesses thus continue their mission to qualify for the women's soccer tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Eliminated from qualification for the 2023 AFCON, Cameroon was in a bad way in the race for the women's soccer tournament at the 2024 Olympics. The Indomitable Lionesses lost the first leg of the 2nd round in Uganda (2-0). With their backs against the wall, the Cameroonians had to win by at least two goals to avoid elimination. They did just that (3-0).
Ajara N'Chout Njoya led the way, opening the scoring in the 27th minute. Monique Ngock (19), the young midfielder from Stade Reims, put the two teams back on level terms just after the break (2-0, 47th). But throughout the 90 minutes, Cameroon failed to score the famous 3rd goal that would have saved them extra time. So it was in extra time, in the 115th minute, that Brigitte Omboudou delivered the whole country by scoring the 3-0, synonymous with qualification for the 3rd and penultimate round of the qualifiers.
Cameroon to take on Nigeria
In this 3rd and penultimate round, Cameroon will face Nigeria. The Nigerians beat Ethiopia. After a surprising draw in Addis Ababa last week (1-1), they won the return leg comfortably (4-0) on Tuesday October 31. However, it was not until stoppage time in the first half that Kanu opened the scoring. The Super Falcons then took full advantage in the second half. Ajibalde, scorer in the first leg, scored twice (50th and 72nd). Star striker Assisat Oshooala also got in on the act with his 3rd goal (68th).
Tanzania joins South Africa
Tanzania continues its march towards the women's soccer tournament of the 2024 Olympic Games. The Tanzanians eliminated Botswana. After winning 2-0 away, they did the minimum service at home 1-0. Aisa Makassa scored the only goal of the game (26th).The next hurdle, however, is very high. It's South Africa, the reigning African champions. The South Africans saw off the DR Congo (1-1 in the first leg, 2-0 in the return).
Ghana, 3-0 winners in the first leg in Cotonou, confirmed their supremacy over Benin in front of their home crowd in the second leg of the 2nd qualifying round for the 2024 Olympic Games. The Ghanaians dominated Benin 2-0.Nugget Evelyne Badu opened the scoring (65th) before the Beninese scored in their own half (75th).Ghana are now through to the 3rd and penultimate round, where they will face Zambia. The Zambians did not play in the 2nd round as their opponents Mali withdrew.
