Uganda’s Naakaayi targets good performance in World Athletics Indoor Championships

Uganda’s middle distance runner Halima Nakaayi has promised to put up a good performance at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Serbia.

The World Athletics Indoor Championships will take place from March 18-20th in Belgrade with 680 athletes taking part.

Uganda will be represented by Nakaayi in the 800m race, while Winnie Nanyondo takes part in the 1,5000m race.

I have trained well and already taken part in some races in France which have helped me get in shape. I expect to perform really well because I feel I am in great shape,” says Nakaayi.

She will face challenges from a field of star runners like the 2020 TokyoOlympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson and Jamaica’s Natoya Goule.

I am determined to continue improving my times as the Commonwealth Games get closer,” added Nakaayi who failed to win a medal last year at the Tokyo Olympics. Nakaayi won gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told Sports News Africa that they are confident Uganda’s two representatives in Serbia will perform well.

“We are confident that Nakaayi and Nanyondo have prepared well and have what it takes to win medals,” added Otuchet.

Last weekend another Ugandan runner Victor Kiplangat won the Gent Half Marathon in Belgium.
