In a tight quarter-final, Zambia and Senegal fought a hard battle. In the end, the Zambians won the penalty shootout to advance to the semi-finals.
First quarterfinal of the 2022 Women's AFCON between Zambia and Senegal. After a hard-fought match, Zambia won 4-2 on penalties (1-1 ap).
Senegal has the ball at the beginning of the match. The Lionesses have almost 60% of the ball possession. But they could not find the target. Struggling, the Zambians do not try any shot during this time. Simply committing fouls, the Copper Queens are also sanctioned with two yellow cards for Matha Tembo and Lushomo Mweemba. However, they came out of the woodwork in the last 15 minutes of the first half and had a few chances. But neither team managed to find the breakthrough before the break in this quarter-final game.
A balanced match
In the second set, both teams try to make the difference. But in the balanced matches, it is often on a set piece that the decision is made. Thus, Senegal will open the score in the 61st minute. On a free kick kicked by Mbayang Sow, Nguenar Ndiaye rises and puts the ball in the net. However, this lead was not to last. The Senegalese goalkeeper was completely out of her depth and let the ball fly after a long aerial pass from the center circle. Zambia's Avell Chitundu simply pushed the ball into the empty net (70th). The Senegalese pass even close to the correction a few minutes later. However, Tening Sène managed to push back the shot of the Zambian striker.
The extra time and the penalty shootout
