Women's AFCON 2024 (Q): Mali and Senegal show their strength while the DRC tremble

The nations qualified for the Women's AFCON 2024 are known after the return legs of the second qualifying round on Tuesday December 5. Senegal, Ghana, Tunisia and Mali have all qualified. The DRC clinched their ticket on the wire against Equatorial Guinea.

Senegal  stay on course

Senegal traveled to Egypt on Tuesday December 5 for the second leg of the final qualifying round for the 2024 Women's AFCON. The Lionesses of Teranga managed to hold on to their 4-goal advantage from the first leg, drawing 0-0 with the Egyptians. The Senegalese have thus secured their ticket for this major event in African women's soccer. This will be their 3rd appearance after 2012 and 2022.

Big wins for Mali and Zambia

The Malians made short work of the Guineans. After a crushing 7-2 victory in the first leg, Mali finished the job on the road with another heavy 0-3 win. They are one of the few teams to have won both their matches. Mali are therefore qualified for the next Women's AFCON.

As for Zambia, they largely dominated Angola in this double confrontation. After a 6-0 win in the first leg, the Zambians did it again in the return. They won by the same score (6-0).Third at the last edition, Zambia are setting the tone by qualifying in style. The other nations have been warned.

Ghana and DRC go down to the wire

Ghana took on Namibia away from home after winning the first leg 3-1. The second leg was no easy task for the Ghanaians, who lost 1-0. A second goal from the Namibians would have been enough for the Black Queens to be eliminated. They did, however, manage to hold on to their one-goal advantage and qualify.

On their part, DR Congo came from behind to defeat Equatorial Guinea 2-1. The Congolese equalised in the 55th minute before scoring the winner in the 74th minute. The two teams had played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg.The DRC thus came back from a long way down in this match and heroically clinched their ticket to Morocco.

Nigeria dominate Cape Verde

Nigeria, the most successful nation in the Women's AFCON (11 titles), defeated Cape Verde (1-2) on Tuesday December 5 in the second leg of their qualifier for the Women's AFCON 2024. The Nigerians had won the first leg 5-0. Having failed to win a title since 2018, they will be keen to get back to winning ways in Morocco at this year's event.
