FIFA proceeded this Saturday with the draw of the play-offs of the World Cup 2022. The 10 nations still in the running and concerned by this draw now know their respective opponents to get their ticket to Qatar.
The die is cast. The day after the draw for the preliminary round of the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers was made by CAF, FIFA proceeded to the draw for the play-offs for the 2022 World Cup.
Again in Douala and in the presence of many former African internationals, Emmanuel Adebayor and El Hadji Diouf were in charge of the draw. And the two legends of the CAF have proceeded to a draw that will produce some interesting fixtures. Algeria, still the reigning African champions for a fortnight, will have to return to Cameroon. The Greens have inherited the Indomitable Lions for this double confrontation.
Senegal will face Egypt. Ghana and Nigeria meet in a derby that will also be worth a visit, especially as the Black Stars will want to restore their reputation after their premature elimination from the 2021 African Cup of Nations.
Morocco will travel to DR Congo to face the Leopards, while Mali and Tunisia, opponents in the group stage of this AFCON 2021, with the famous controversy of the refereeing of Janny Sikazwe, will meet once again for the playoffs of the World Cup 2022.
As a reminder, the matches will take place in March, during the next international break. It will be in the form of a double-header, with the teams in hat two hosting the first leg and those in hat one having the advantage of playing the return leg at home. Otherwise, the match will be played on a neutral ground. The five winners of the double-header will qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup finals, which will take place from 21 November to 18 December in Qatar, and will represent the African continent.
